Is that...The Leader of the Snake Cult?!

Yes, you could argue that he's an Empire Light Wizard, but I saw something more sinister in this little piece of plastic...

Purchased years ago on the cover of a White Dwarf mag (186) I've always really liked this particular mini, although I have to admit if I had the opportunity to buy said mag again I'd try to find the one with a Celestial Wizard on the cover - he's just so cool!

He's just too cool.

To be totally honest I had a very difficult time bringing this guy to life, a gestation that has taken YEARS since being started I might add - something which led to him being nicknamed 'Shit Wizard'
Not wanting to leave him with such a title, I decided to just go for broke and paint him in the manner that I felt suited him best - an evil brainwashing Thulsa Doom-esque Cultist leader.

I don't know why I see these things in otherwise innocent war game minis... I just do.

Painted at last and ready to steal the souls of the unwary...

'Something, something, something... but it is not THIS DAY!'

The veteran of many battles (mostly defeats...) This mini once faced off against a Skaven Horde led by a Grey Seer who rode upon the empty shell of a miniature RC offroader car pretending to be a Skaven Screaming Bell model... True story!

"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!"

    1. I know right??! The original scheme in WD186 by Mr McVey is very colourful (and complicated!) and certainly fits the theme they were going for at the time, but I just needed him to be bad!

Might get the chance to set him loose in the Bog soon, maybe against some unsuspecting adventurous types...

Speaking of which, I hope you have been taking photos of all the games you must be playing?!
The RT on Space Hulk boards you told me about last time sounded pretty exciting!

    2. Haven't really gamed as much as I had hoped to. My gaming buddy is otherwise engaged :(

If you'd like to see some Space Hulk RT action, check out last year's jaunt that we played the same time last year on his blog, http://6ironspikes.blogspot.com.au/2014/07/rogue-trader-vlad-kirbys-enslaved-orks.html

He's pretty much given up on blogging for now.....almost a year now since his last post, but there's other ROC & RT batrep's between both of us on there too. Just have a look through his archive and you'll find'em.

I'm hoping to get a few more games in before I leave, fingers crossed & all that.

      Cheers buddy :)

    2. Just realised that they were mounted on round bases in the WD. Wonder why they did that?

    3. Oh, I get you. Yeah, I remember changing him to a square base to play WH 4th Ed with him after buying the mag. Light Wizards had this 'formation' of acolytes (kind of like a mini unit) that boosted the wizard's power and protected him - and obv that had to be ranked up so a square base was needed.

The only reason I can think of for the round 25mm bases being included is that some of these minis were used as Talisman characters - cant remember which edition it was though...

  3. Why don't we get free miniatures with the mags nowadays .... boo. But on a more serious note, nicely done Ace! :)

    1. Haha! I don't remember WD making it a regular thing! I think the only free minis I got when I used to buy GW stuff was the above wizard and a Chaos Marine? There are plenty of peeps in the Oldhammer forum who could probably list all the freebies tho!

Hope some of those sites will give you some terrain/basing ideas!

  4. Top notch painting! I love that greenish tinge. It's the Colour of the Year in R'yleh.

    1. Thank you Matt! It took a concerted effort to get it looking nice and sickly =) My only lament is that the base coat that I applied years ago was a bit on the rough side - makes his face a bit 'looser' than I would have liked, but you can't have everything!
